Overview

Flavours of fresh apple, with undertones of vanilla bean and baking spice.

Tasting Notes

Colour is rich golden straw. Upfront aromas of butter-poached pear, preserved lemon and fresh baked bread. The palate delivers flavours of fresh apple, with undertones of vanilla bean and baking spice. A delicate mouth-feel with acidity to stay refreshed. The oak is well integrated and although present, not overpowering the fruit. Long lingering finish.

Awards

Rockway Vineyards' 2014 Wild Ferment Chardonnay (VQA) has proudly won the following awards:

  • Silver Medal, Finger Lakes International Wine Competition

"This displays stunning purity of fruit, balance, structure and charm—huge kudos to Rockway winemaker, David Stasiuk. Hand-harvested fruit was whole-cluster pressed, racked off coarse lees into French oak barrel where fermentation and malolactic conversion were followed by 7-months oak aging with lees stirring before bottling. Aromas of baking spice and orchard fruit give way to a gorgeously textured and complex medium-bodied river of pineapple, lemon-lime and quince jelly. Pour alongside roast pork tenderloin."

***** Five Stars (Vic Harradine)

"A medium body Chardonnay, which shows great poise. Peach, green apple, pear, citrus, honey and vanilla are built on a creamy texture and excellent length. Without a doubt, this is a wine that requires lobster or Alaskan king crab with drawn butter."

90 Points (Evan Saviolidis)

"Wild Ferment Chardonnay is gaining more and more popularity as many winemakers opt to go the less interventionist route. Yeast exist naturally in the air, or clinging to vines and grapes, and natural fermentations rely on those yeasts to turn grape juice into wine. This is a nice effort coming from Rockway, with a fragrant and fresh nose of peach, lemon meringue and baby powder. Lovely depth, on the softly creamy palate which is brightened by vibrant acid."

4 ½ Stars (Courtney Henderson and Erin Henderson, The Wine Sisters)
